stone horse

Part 1, page 498, when he is talking about the desert and how we usually think of a desert as being a empty quiet place but but during WWII the military moved into it and took it over liking the climate and isolation of the area, which is now occupied by the American military in great force. The imagery of the planes and troop movements over the area with much history that will now be forgotten and destroyed in the name of training means a lot to me. The gun ranges and test ranges for weapons was much needed and helped us win the war and subsequent wars but for the people who had lived there, the "aboriginal sites" that were destroyed was a great loss, and I do question if all of it was necessary. At least there were some amateur archeologists but not near enough to really study the area. Emotions of the thought of something being destroyed never to be seen again, the metaphor that to the govt. the military need always trumps any other need.
